Those familiar with the Step Brothers movie will immediately recognize the reference to the Catalina Wine Mixer. The loveable (and cult-favorite) movie follows Dale and Brennan, played by John C Reilly and Will Ferrell, become stepbrothers in their 40s after their parents get married. The movie culminates in the planning of the "biggest helicopter leasing event in the Western Hemisphere," also known as the " F#$%@%! Catalina Wine Mixer."
In 2015, the Catalina Island Company decided it made perfect sense to create the Step Brothers-inspired Catalina Wine Mixer. We had Catalina, we just had to add some helicopters, music and wine. The two-day event, held in May/June, is a fun way to relive the movie, the lines and the antics of the characters.
The Catalina Wine Mixer® is back, and better than ever! Now in its 9th year, this unique wine and music event promises a whole weekend of spectacular fun on gorgeous Catalina Island. The magic begins once you set off for the island on Friday. Whether you take to the sea with Catalina Express or Catalina Flyer, or lease a helicopter to really get in the spirit of things, your journey across the Pacific promises to be a scenic one.
Hotel Atwater and Pavilion Hotel have their own charm for you to discover once you set foot on Catalina, but don’t linger too long, because the VIP parties get underway from 5 pm, with an exclusive reception at Catalina Country Club. Over choice hors d'oeuvres and pours, you’ll get to know other party-goers and form friendships that will last if not a lifetime, then at least this amazing weekend.
After the opening bash in front of Catalina Casino, a special screening of Step Brothers, the movie that began it all, will happen later that evening at the historic Avalon Theatre. The fun will continue at a late-night beach party at the Descanso Beach Club, to get you warmed up for the main event.
On Saturday, the official Catalina Wine Mixer® will happen from 4 pm to 10 pm at the Descanso Beach Club. Just steps away from the shimmering water, you’ll enjoy live music, DJs, dancing, delicious foods, cocktails, and of course, some fantastic wines from over 20+ wineries. Special tasting events are also available this year, including a beer tasting in downtown Avalon at the new Flx Biergarten!
VIPs may take advantage of early access to the wine tastings on the Lawn from 3 to 4 pm. Pours from leading wineries will also be served alongside appetizers at the Catherine’s Terrace VIP Lounge from 3 pm to 10 pm.
