On this paradisiacal island, there are so many options for you to explore Catalina’s natural beauty entirely your way. Arguably the best way to get up close and personal with the outdoors is with a camping experience on Catalina Island. Some of the best camping on Catalina happens at Two Harbors. Located on the west end of Catalina Island, the Two Harbors campgrounds offer access not just to pristine beaches and a highly diverse marine ecosystem, but also to all the amenities you’ll need for an unforgettable camping getaway.

More than a century ago, William Wrigley Jr. set out to create a “playground for all” on Catalina Island. Today, nearly one million people from all walks of life visit Catalina each year to enjoy everything from a relaxing day at Descanso Beach Club to an exciting ride on the Zip Line Eco Tour. But perhaps the most unique experience that continues to attract people to this beautiful island paradise is the opportunity to see American Bison, the United States’ National Mammal since 2016.

In 1916, William Wrigley bought a share of Chicago's National League, and over the next five years steadily increased his stake.  In 1921, as the team set up the field and clubhouse in Avalon Canyon, although never officially named, Avalon townspeople began calling the field Wrigley Field. During this time, the Cubs home field, back in Chicago, was known as Weeghman Park.

Catalina Island’s Bird Park opened in 1929 and was a popular attraction in Avalon for over 35 years. Admission to the park was free. It was considered the world’s largest bird park at the time, covering almost seven and a half acres in Avalon Canyon, across from the Catalina Island Golf Course.

In 1888, Peter Gano, a civil engineer and talented craftsman from Pasadena, began building a beautiful Queen Anne architectural style cottage on Avalon’s southern hillside overlooking Avalon bay.

For adventurous skippers in Southern California, Catalina Island is one of the most convenient and enjoyable cruising destination. Sure, if you’re financially independent or just quit your job, you could set sail for La Paz or the Sea of Cortez. But for the rest of us, we’re more than happy to cross the channel and drop anchor off beautiful Catalina Island.

First time visitors to Avalon are often deeply moved by the sights and sounds of this beautiful seaside hamlet. The iconic Catalina Casino is invariably the first sight most see as they approach the harbor, and often the first sound they hear once they arrive emanates from the hillside just above the Casino, where the historic Chimes Tower has been singing its familiar tune every fifteen minutes for the past 92 years.
