To help curb the spread of the coronavirus we have implemented the following changes with our golfers well-being in mind: At this time only four golfers will be permitted on the course with 10 minute minimums between tee times, we have placed pool noodles in the cups so golfers do not need to retrieve their ball to minimize contact, and rakes and ball washers have been removed. Along with these changes we have closed the pro shop and no longer offer rental clubs or rental pull cards, and only one person is allowed per golf cart which will be disinfected between each use upon its return with EPA approved products. The health and safety of our guests and golfers has always been our top priority and we appreciate you choosing to golf with us.
A great example of Catalina’s charm and history can be found at Catalina Island Country Club and Golf Course, the oldest operating course west of the Mississippi and the former home of the Bobby Jones Invitational Tournament.
Originally built in 1892 as a three-hole course, this scenic, 2,100-yard course now offers nine challenging holes, with two sets of tees for 18-hole play. The full Pro Shop, rents clubs and electric and pull carts.
The course was expanded to 9 holes in the early 1900s, and to an 18-hole tournament-level course in 1929. After World War II in 1945, the course was brought back to its current 9-hole layout, featuring five Par 4s and four Par 3s.
The long, narrow course meanders through a canyon setting toward the ocean, offering stunning views of Avalon Bay and the iconic Casino. The small greens and deep bunkers are enough to challenge any golfer. A driving net is available. Deer, hawks and island fox frequent the area.
Since 1967, the Avalon Men's Golf Club has sponsored the annual Catalina Island Junior Golf Tournament. Junior golfers who played in the tournament and went on to greater fame include Craig Stadler, Corey Pavin, and Tiger Woods, who first played here at age 4 and then again at age 14. The Bobby Jones Invitational Tournament called Catalina home from 1931-1955.
