Preserving the iconic character of the historic California landmark, the comprehensive, five-year $40 million revitalization plan will unveil the Island’s first-ever resort spa and the transformation of Descanso Beach Club in 2014. With the redesign of the Island’s landmark properties including the Atwater Hotel and the Pavilion Hotel, the Company’s development plan is already underway with updated dining options and new retail concepts to be debuted throughout 2014.
“Catalina Island is a distinctive and iconic destination in California and we are excited to bring a new level of offerings and experiences to our guests,” says Randall Herrel, CEO of Santa Catalina Island Company. “Whether our guests have been visiting for generations or for the first time, everyone will find options and amenities that suit the modern traveler, while celebrating and preserving the history and heritage for which the island is known and beloved.”
The Santa Catalina Island Company’s multi-million dollar rejuvenation includes the following projects over a five-year period:
Island Spa Catalina – Opening late summer 2014, the Island’s first-ever resort spa will feature nine treatment rooms with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, an Island Spa Café, Spa Shoppe, a salon, an ocean view relaxation deck, a spa courtyard complete with a uniquely designed soaking pool and luxurious chaise lounges for guests to relax before and after treatments. Reflecting Catalina’s rich history and seaside atmosphere, Island Spa Catalina was designed to complement the graceful architecture of the famed El Encanto Building, originally built in the 1930’s. Keeping with local tradition and design, the Spa will offer relaxing, healing and therapeutic treatments including results-oriented skin care and rejuvenating body therapies that integrate island grown, organic and natural ingredients in a pampering environment that infuse guests with the island’s spirit. The Spa Shoppe will offer a fun selection of retail lifestyle items, resort wear, home design items, and skin and body care products.
Descanso Beach Club – A new look for Descanso Beach will debut in September 2014 with the opening of new guest facilities just steps away from the beach as a part of the ongoing $8 million dollar renovation. The centerpiece of this extensive renovation is the 13,000-square foot Clubhouse that will feature multiple meeting spaces with spectacular ocean views of beautiful Descanso Bay, as well as indoor seating for up to 200 people for meetings or special events. Adjacent to the Clubhouse will be Descanso Fresh, a gourmet espresso bar and ice cream shop offering fresh-made pizza, bakery goods, ice cream and coffee drinks. New waterfront presidential cabanas will also be added and each of the three presidential cabanas will accommodate up to six guests and is furnished with teak tables and chairs, chaise lounges, beach chairs, refreshing Oshibori towels, beach robes, a refrigerator, a flat-screen TV and use of an iPad with complimentary WiFi.
New restaurants and retail spaces – Showcasing environmentally responsible, fresh seafood fare, the re-envisioned signature Avalon Grille, will introduce new culinary concepts. SCICo will also be replacing three existing stores with a new flagship retail store called Latitude 33. The new 3,400-square foot store is at the corner of Crescent and Catalina Avenues and will feature a selection of island and resort wear for women, men and children. A specialty hand-made ice cream parlor will also be added adjacent to the new retail space to surprise and delight summer visitors.
Catalina Country Club – Set for completion in 2015, Country Club renovations include new resort-style swimming pools, a 4000-square foot fitness facility, an indoor banquet venue with seating for over 150 guests, an event lawn and a $5M update to the Catalina Golf Course.  These additions will center on the original and elegant Mediterranean Clubhouse that was built in 1928 and match its architecture. A perfect solution for small and mid-sized groups, the Catalina Country Club will provide food and amenities for indoor and outdoor venues that will be ideal for wedding ceremonies, receptions and corporate events. The resort pools and fitness facility will be available to all Island guests on a daily fee basis.
Already completed to great acclaim from visitors, the re-design of the Pavilion Hotel and Hotel Atwater and select island restaurants and retail spaces were introduced throughout 2013. Catalina-inspired seafood restaurant Bluewater Avalon debuted in May 2013 and the newly established Shops at the Atwater Arcade providing a selection of unique gift shops, restaurants, hardware store and the Post Office.. SCICo is also re-introducing exciting new guest packages for hands-on experiences signature to Catalina Island, including zip line tours, sea expeditions, and heli-hiking tours throughout the coming year.
