Mountain biking on Santa Catalina Island is a must-do for serious bikers. From Two Harbors, several trails provide direct access to the island’s rugged interior and beautiful shoreline. Most of the trails are judged moderate to advanced, with each providing fantastic views. Just want to cruise around the village? That’s okay, too. Just watch for pedestrians.
Bicycling is unrestricted within one mile of the village of Two Harbors. But once you venture to the island’s interior, permits are required. Permits cost $65 for individuals and $90 for families (including spouse and minor children), and are valid from May 1- April 30. Only annual permits are sold; day passes are available. Accident, liability and life insurance are included with the permit.
Most of the cross-channel passenger carriers transport bicycles for a fee with advance reservations. In case you did not bring your own bike, rentals are available at the Two Harbors Dive & Recreation Center. Every rental includes a helmet, map and a permit. Bikes are allowed on the Safari Bus for a fee of $5.00 per bike.
