Zip Line Operations Manager
REPORTS TO: Director of Descanso Canyon Activities
Under supervision of the Director of Descanso Canyon Activities, in accordance with the mission and vision of the Company, oversees the day to day operations, safety, maintenance, and staffing of the Zipline Department, consistent with established Company, City of Avalon, State of California and Industry standards and policies.
This position is accountable for the quality, customer service, safety, and profitability of the Zipline Tour and Climbing Wall operations. The Zipline Operations Manager supervises a staff that nearly doubles in the summer season from a year round level of approximately 25 to 30 staff members.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES PERFORMED:
Responsible for the training and scheduling of all personnel, including department Supervisors, Guides, Base Camp Attendants and Climbing Coaches, as well as the scheduling of tours, activities and hours of operation. Monitor service levels, customer satisfaction and compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
Possess knowledge and skills for safe and effective equipment donning and use, proper knot tying and rope use, zipline course and climbing wall operation and rescue, as well as various equipment and system inspections. Insure zipline course and climbing wall maintenance is a priority and work closely with outside agencies when needed to insure all elements are maintained properly.
Ensure all areas of safety protocol are followed by all employees. Conduct monthly staff safety meetings and trainings. Assure accident, injury, and evacuation protocols are maintained at all times.
Maintain a strong knowledge and understanding of island ecology and impart knowledge to appropriate staff members and clients.
Maintain clear and ongoing communication in order to coordinate weekly with other departments such as the Tours/Activities and Sales Departments.
Human Resource Management
Conduct employee interviews and direct the hiring process for qualified candidates. Handle rehire paperwork and related activities for employees returning for the season. Assign work items including uniforms, equipment, system logins, and training materials.
Effectively resolve employee performance issues, working with Human Resources Management as needed. Complete timely documentation of the issues and corrective action plans.
Develop a working knowledge of the WMx time and attendance systems. Update time and attendance systems and approve records in a thorough and timely manner for all personnel.
Develop a working knowledge of the Tix.com reservation system in order to manage proper tour, activity, and merchandise availability and pricing. Develop a working knowledge of the PicSolve ride photo system.
Oversee employee scheduling to ensure that staffing levels are consistent with workload with consideration to seasonality.
Monitor budget and expenses on a regular basis to ensure annual budget objectives are achieved. Participate in the annual budget process.
Must pass and complete required site-specific safety training course offered by the Company. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must have or immediately obtain CPR, AED and First Aid Training and be able to work comfortably at heights.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Two-year College or University program certificate; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possess prior managerial experience with outdoor recreations, athletics, educational roles, ziplining, and/or recreational climbing.
Able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Demonstrate ability to effectively respond to questions from superiors, staff, clients, and the general public.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Zipline employee to successfully perform the essential functions of their job. Candidates must have the physical capability to assist and accommodate riders of various sizes throughout the zipline course, including rescues.
- Must be able to walk, stand and exert well-paced mobility for up to 8 hours.
- Must be able to hike, climb and rappel to and from various heights and altitudes.
- Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat, stretch, push and pull on a regular and continuous basis.
- Must have full range of overhead arm motions and full hand dexterity.
- Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
- Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs on a regular and continuous basis.
- Must have a strong upper body to pull self and be able to pull and push riders weighing up to 250 lbs along each cable and platform’s incline.
- Must be able to effectively decrease the speed of and stop riders of various weights and speeds as they approach all incoming platforms.
- Requires visual acuity and the ability to hear clearly in an outdoor environment.
The work environment characteristic described here is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of their job. All positions are required to work in a fast-paced, physical, social, professional, and team oriented work environment. The majority of the work is conducted outdoors in climates from 40 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
