Undersea Magic

Snorkeling is an easy and fun way to experience the natural beauty of Santa Catalina Island. Voted “World’s Healthiest Marine Environment” by Scuba Diving Magazine, the water is clear and clean, with visibility ranging from 40-100 feet. Water temperatures vary from 55-72 degrees. Lessons, rentals and guided dive trips are available.

Avalon’s naturally clear water, abundant marine life, giant kelp forests and snorkel-friendly services make the island a top destination for divers. Several coves are particularly popular with snorkelers.

Lover’s Cove Undersea Gardens

The Lover's Cove Undersea Garden has been a protected marine sanctuary for decades. Located south of Avalon Bay, the cove's undersea kelp gardens are home to hundreds of fish and invertebrates species. The Lover's Cove Marine Preserve is a two minute walk from the center of town, located just past the boat landing. Snorkeling is easy and fun for all ages! No experience is necessary! Descanso Beach

Descanso Beach is a bit secluded and removed from the busier Avalon Harbor. Located just north of the Avalon Casino, Descanso Beach offers easy access to the water, excellent visibility, and abundant marine life. A great selection snorkel gear is available. Casino Point Marine Park

Located at the edge of the Catalina Casino building, the Casino Point Marine Park is Southern California 's first city-designated underwater park. Established in 1965 by the City of Avalon as a reserve, Casino Point Marine Park has an abundance of marine life, giant kelp forests and several shipwrecks to explore. Several artificial reefs have been established to provide additional habitats.
