About Us

Employment

Dear Applicant

Thank you for your interest in applying for a position with the Santa Catalina Island Company. We’ve included some information with this letter that may help you in your decision to seek employment with our company.

What We Do

The Santa Catalina Island Company has many factions.

  1. We own and lease real estate.
  2. We own and operate sightseeing tours on land and water. One of our tours, the Flying Fish Tour is the only one of its kind in the world!
  3. We own and operate the world-famous Casino Building. (Not a gambling casino. Our casino has an 1184 seat theater and a beautiful ballroom, which hosts many major events such as a Blues Festival, Jazz Festival and Country Music Festival.) We offer tours through this art-deco wonder every day.
  4. We own and operate a Campground right outside of Avalon.
  5. We own and operate two hotel properties. The Pavilion Lodge is just 14 steps from the beach and the Hotel Atwater is the largest hotel on the island.
  6. We run an Arabian Horse ranch in the middle of the island. We have an intern program for students who want to gain college credits for working in the equestrian field.
  7. We run the only gas station in Avalon and own and operate our own fleet garage for our sightseeing equipment.
  8. In addition to all of the above, we have the largest reservation department on the island, a planning department, and corporate offices to keep all of our business going.

Seasonal Employees

Each year we hire approximately 40 seasonal employees. These employees come not only from around the country but from Europe as well. For some, this is their first job for others this is a supplement to their retirement, or a second career, and for still others, they love Catalina and return each summer to help others enjoy its beauty.

Appearance

All of our front-line employees wear a uniform. They consist of khaki shorts or pants, white polo shirts and sweaters or jackets when needed. The uniforms are provided at no cost.

We look for people who are clean, with normal (not extreme) hairstyles, no body piercing except for ears, and no visible tattoos. We start hiring in April, and add staff through June. Although we accept a few employees who have to leave us in August, we look for people who can stay at least through Labor Day.

Housing

If you need housing, we provide some dormitory-style housing for our employees. Most units consist of one small room with a bed and dresser and a bathroom. The employees share a kitchen area and a common area with a TV. The rent for these units is $300 a month with a $100 deposit. There are also a few units where two employees share the room and the bathroom is down the hall. These units are in our hotel and rent for $200 per month per employee. They are available only when the other units have been filled. Rent is automatically deducted from your paycheck, so it is a good idea to arrive with enough money to hold you over for three weeks.

Transportation To The Island

We do not pay your transportation to the island. There are three boat companies that come to the island: Catalina Explorer from Dana Point (310-510-9404), Catalina Passenger Service from Newport Beach (949) 673-5245 or (800) 830-7744, and Catalina Express from Dana Point, Long Beach and San Pedro (310) 519-1212 or 1(800) 618-5533. You will need to call for a reservation. Times of departures vary according to boat company, day of the week and time of year. Also the cost is different depending on which boat company you use. There’s also a helicopter service called Island Express from Long Beach and San Pedro 1 (800) 2Avalon.

General Information

Personal Mail boxes can be obtained when you get to the island. UPS and Fed Ex both deliver here. If you have large items that you want to ship, you can contact Catalina Freight Line at (310) 549-4004.

Things To Bring

Plan on warm days and cool nights. June can be downright chilly. In addition to your clothes, you’ll want to bring a set of dishes and pans for your own cooking needs, bed linens, including a pillow, for a single bed, and towels. You will also need I.D. and documents showing eligibility for employment in the United States, examples of these would be a valid driver’s license and social security card or U.S. Passport. You cannot start work without these! If you want to check to see what forms of I.D are acceptable, call the Receptionist at (310) 510-2000 ext. 1200.

Equal Employment Policy

The Santa Catalina Island Company believes all persons are entitled to equal employment opportunity and does not discriminate against its employees or applicants because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital status, national origin, citizenship, veteran status, ancestry, age, physical or mental disability, or medical condition, or any other consideration made unlawful by applicable laws. Equal employment opportunity will be extended to all persons in all aspects of the employer-employee relationship, including recruitment, hiring, upgrading, training, promotion, transfer, discipline, layoff, recall and termination. The Santa Catalina Island Company will make reasonable accommodations for the known physical or mental disabilities of an otherwise qualified applicant for employment or employee, unless undue hardship would result.

How To Get Hired

If you are interested in working with us this summer, here’s what to do: send in your application to my attention. If you have reference letters, include them. If you are planning to come to the island for the interview, call me to set up a time. If you want to have your interview on the mainland in either San Pedro or Long Beach, call me in March or April for the dates of those interviews. If you live too far to come for a personal interview, you may do a video interview. Just have a trusted friend grab a video camera and film you. Relax, have fun and tell me about yourself. What jobs you’ve had, why you want to come to Catalina. What you’re studying in school. Anything that gives me a good idea of who you are and what kinds of skills (people skills are the best) you have. Mail the video (standard VHS tape is great) in to my attention at Santa Catalina Island Company, P.O. Box 737, Avalon, CA 90704. If you have any further questions, you can e-mail me at jobs@scico.com

Thanks again for your interest. I’m looking forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

Debbie Harrell
